Yes, agree with this. I think students have to be free not to like teachers but still behave well. And teachers have to put competence in teaching first, there is a danger that teachers might focus on relationships in order to get kids onside and then neglect their actual practice.

I'm sure salesmen are told to build relationships with potential customers, and in that sense relationships become transactional, the relationship is based on the customer falling in line (you just have to watch an episode of The Apprentice to see this in action). I think there's a similar issue with relationships in teaching.
